Morocco’s demand to join the AU not yet handed out to members

While in Tanzania as part of his east African visit, the King of Morocco, Mohammed the VI, had a phone conversation with Chadian President, Idriss Déby, asking him to recall Mme Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, head of the African Union commission, of her duty to hand out Morocco’s application to adhere to the African Union to all member states, as stipulated by the organization’s charter. The Chadian President, who chaired the last AU summit in Rwanda, welcomed immediately this demand.

The king’s move comes to prevent any future delay to Morocco’s demand to join the AU which ought to be formalized in January 2017, and to refute the idea that this demand was a mere short-sighted diplomatic action, as some countries tried to convey, say analysts
